WHAT IS MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK WITHOUT MURCHISON FALLS?

The Uganda Electricity Regulatory Authority has given South African Energy Company Bonang Power and Energy limited a green light to carry out a feasibility study at Murchison Falls and other activities that will support the construction of a 650 MW power dam. This has attracted the struggle to save Murchison falls.

Murchison Falls has been for over 70 years a strong back bone for Uganda’s Tourism industry, at the falls, the Nile squeezes through an 8m wide gorge and plunges with a thunderous sound into the Devils cauldron, which creates an outstanding Rainbow trademark.

Uganda’s tourism bodies are up and already combating this unthinkable act. The leading tour operators’ association (AUTO) has started a battle. Below was its press release.

Murchison Falls is a center piece of the national park, Murchison falls national park is one park with almost all that is there to see in Uganda’s wildlife that is lions, elephants, chimps and shoebills. It’s a park that has hosted most of Uganda’s important dignitaries. It’s a place that has given people the most thrilling idea of what travel is. Its simply an unforgettable experience that attracts very many tourists.

The loss to Tourism, tourism-related jobs for communities around Murchison Falls far outweighs temporary electrical gains.

Destroying the most powerful waterfall in the world will leave most of us wounded forever, once a dam is built a waterfall cannot be recovered and there is no way both can exist.

Destroying Murchison Falls in the name of development is a regression, a step backward. Murchison Falls should also be named UNESCO’s world heritage site, we believe this will save Murchison falls and Uganda’s tourism.

Many tourism Gurus have put out their cries to the Government, and we still have hope that the falls will be saved. On average Murchison Falls is the most visited destination in every tour and travel company carrying out Uganda safari.

Chris Higginson, the Owner of Murchison River Lodge stated “Murchison Falls, Not only is it one of the most beautiful and most visited national parks in Uganda, it is without question an area of extraordinary natural beauty. Uganda’s tourism sector continues to grow steadily, thus providing huge returns for the Government, whilst creating important employment opportunities for Ugandan nationals and offering development opportunities for stakeholders. The Falls are the epicenter of the national park, the oxygen that keeps the park alive. If the hydropower plant is permitted to go ahead it will steal Uganda’s largest national park of its gem in the crown, while simultaneously robbing future generations access to one of Uganda’s greatest wonders.”

The Tourism sector has sustainable income and Income that can shoot up.

Uganda as a nation is aware of how much important the tourism sector is. In the 2019 – 2020 Uganda’s Budget, The Tourism sector’s budget has been increased from sh. 32 Billion to sh. 193 Billion. Tourism is a non-destructive and sustainable if you deliver what you promise. Let’s save our tourism sector drama, we cannot take tourists for a game drive and say “this is where Murchison falls used to be.”
