This year 2021 the Pilgrimage to the Uganda Martyrs shrine has been canceled by the Ugandan Bishop. This we shall not visit Uganda Martyr’s shrine Namugongo. This decision was by the Ugandan archbishops. Secondly, Masaka Diocese had finalized the preparations having raised 300 million UGX to finance the occasion. However, the visit to the Uganda martyr’s shrine can happen at a later date this year.

Namugongo is located in Kyaliwajjala Ward, in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, which is approximately 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) in the North-East of Uganda’s capital Kampala. The town neighbors Nsasa to the North, Sonde and Bukeerere to the East, Bweyogerere to the South-East, Naalya and Kireka directly to the south, Kyaliwajjala to the south-west, and central Kira to the west and north-west. The coordinates of Namugongo are 0°23’43.0″N, 32°39’57.0″E (Latitude:0.395289; Longitude: 32.665835).

On 3rd June 1886, 32 young men, were burnt to death at Namugongo for their refusal to renounce Christianity. They were Anglican or Catholic some were burnt from different Locations. Annually on 3rd  June, Christians from Uganda and other parts of the world convene at Namugongo to commemorate the lives and religious beliefs of the Uganda Martyrs. The estimation of the crowds is in hundreds of thousands in every year.

The Namugongo Shrines were first recognised by Joshua Serufusa-Zake (1884–25 June 1985) when he was the Sabaddu of Kira Sub-County. He put a structure at the Namugongo site, where a bigger shrine -Basilica was built later for prayer. Visit Ugaartyr’s shrine Namugongo to get a better perspective.

The basilica consists of 22 copper pillars over 100 feet long supporting the shrine. With the capacity to accommodate 1000 people whose seats are in a circular form. Its construction started in 1967 and its completion in 1975. There was a lake excavation in the Martyrs’ honor. This bears a pavilion or Island which takes the form of a modern boat. It has a deck-like feature on which the altar for Holy Mass is found. And a cabin beneath the altar bearing the Sacristy. A kitchen and bedroom which Pope Francis shortly occupied on his visit to Uganda in 2015.

The martyr’s feast happens on June 3rd. And there are about half a million people who participate in the feast annually. The day of the feast is a national public holiday. Many pilgrims come from all over Uganda and other parts of Africa. Mainly to take part in the Ugandan Martyr’s Feast Day at Namugongo. And also many others follow the celebration on national television. The Uganda Martyrs

The canonization of the 22 of the Catholic martyrs was by Pope Paul VI on 18 October 1964. And these are now saints in the Catholic Church. A basilica has been built at the spot where the majority of them were burned to death. A church stands at the place where the Anglican martyrs met their death. About 2 miles (3.2 km) further east from the Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs.
