Chimpanzee tracking simply refers to a scenario where a group of Tourists together with a guide from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Rwanda development board for Rwanda, gradually follow paths and steps by hiking and bush beating leading them to a chimpanzee habituation family, a group of only 8 tourists is allowed to track at a time unlike Chimpanzee habituation where a number of 6 tourists is permitted.
Chimpanzee habituation is a literal experience gained after spending an hour or an all-day with the chimpanzees in their Natural setting. This chimpanzee habituation is not for the faint of heart. This does involve waking up early in the morning to join your tour guide to head to the chimpanzee nests. The chimpanzee habituation involves the chimpanzees getting used to the ways of man which process is done for about 2 – 3 years.
WHEN IS IT BEST
The chimpanzee habituation is best during months of March, April, May and November. This is when there is less congestion in the parks. In a lesser group you get much closer to the chimpanzee than tracking them in larger groups.

Chimpanzees are a class of apes most closely related to Humans, they occupy the tropical forests and savannahs of the equatorial Africa.
Chimps vary too in Size and height, they are about 1 – 1.7 metres tall and weigh 32Kg – 60 Kg.
Chimpanzees are up at dawn, and their day is spent both in the trees and on the ground. Chimpanzees do their feeding in the late afternoon. Chimps use their hands and feet to move about. They also leap and swing by their arms skillfully from branch to branch. Movement over any significant distance usually takes place on the ground. Though able to walk upright, chimpanzees more often move about on all fours, leaning forward on the knuckles of their hands (knuckle walking). At night they usually sleep in the trees in nests they build of branches and leaves. Chimpanzees are unable to swim, but they will wade in water. The chimpanzee diet is primarily vegetarian and consists of more than 300 different items, mostly fruits, berries, leaves, blossoms, and seeds but also bird eggs and chicks, many insects, and occasionally carrion. Chimpanzees also hunt, both alone and in groups, stalking and killing various mammals such as monkeys, duikers, bushbucks, and wild pigs. They also appear to use certain plants medicinally to cure diseases and expel intestinal parasites.
Unlike the humans the female chimpanzee bears a single young at any time of year after a gestation period of about eight months. The chimp baby weighs about 1.8 kg (about 4 pounds), is almost helpless, and clings to the fur of the mother’s belly as she moves. From about 6 months to 2 years, the youngster rides on the mother’s back. Weaning takes place at about 5 years. Males are considered adults at 16 years of age, and females usually begin to reproduce at about 13 years, but often only two offspring survive during her lifetime. The longevity of chimps is about 45 years in the wild.
Chimpanzee tracking Rules and regulation
- You should be accompanied by a guide
- Leave all items where you found them in the forest
- Smoking is prohibited
- Remain at least 10 meters from the chimpanzees
- Follow your guide’s instructions
- You should not eat or drink in front of the chimpanzees
- Don’t use your flash when taking a photo as it frightens the chimps
- For conservation purposes time spent with the chimpanzees is limited to one hour
- If you are ill you are allowed to visit the chimpanzees as you will put them at risk
- The minimum age for chimp tracking is 15 years
