Uganda is a home to very many wildlife animals that have attracted very many visitors to come to Uganda known as the pearl of Africa. The composition of flora and fauna make up Uganda’s wildlife. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) managed to gazette some of the land which can give a full view of Uganda’s wildlife satisfying one’s needs. Some of these Kampala wildlife safari destinations are:

Uganda Wildlife and Education Centre (UWEC)

The Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Center (UWEC) is a one-stop center where one can experience Uganda’s unimaginable Biodiversity. It’s an enjoyable and exhilarating place/ destination to visit. While here you can learn a lot about animals in Uganda and the ecosystems in which they reside.

UWEC was founded and created by the government of Uganda around 1950 to settle or harbor confiscated and endangered wildlife animals from smugglers and people in the community. It was called the zoo then but later in 1994 the name was changed to Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC). The creation of the center served many purposes. A lot say it will become the number one center for exhibiting wildlife on the African continent. It has also greatly served as an educational reference and study tour to lecturers, teachers, and researchers. UWEC today serves a greater role in Uganda.

What to see in UWEC

There are a lot of animals to see like Rhinoceros, Different kinds of snakes, cheetahs, Elephants, Lions, Carmels, an Ostrich different species of birds not forgetting the beautiful sceneries where one can sit and enjoy nature.

The place is stormed with restaurants at the entrance that provide you with a variety of meals and international delicacies.

Mabamba Island

The Mabamba island Wetland is a piece of land stretching through a narrow and long bay fringed with papyrus towards. The Swamp forms part of the main body of Lake Victoria and is the only swamp close to Kampala where seeing a shoe-bill is a must. In one day Mabamba Swamp Birding Uganda tour, one will still utilize all his time to get to the grassroots of all the different kinds of birds in the swamp and then proceed on his Uganda Safari.

Mabamba Swamp is home to the rare shoebill stalk. it’s an arm of Lake Victoria connecting to the fishing village Bussi Island which is found in Kasanja town.

The shoebill is found in papyrus Mabamba Swamp it rarely stays on land, it’s always found hiding in the water weed trying to feed on the aquatic fish. The shoebill can easily be spotted in this area. What to see in Mabamba

See a Swamp flycatcher, African purple swamphen, African water rail, Pallid Harrier, Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler and the Blue Swallow Common moorhen, lesser jacana, African Jacana, African Pygmy Goose, White-faced whistling duck, Squacco Heron, Blue Breasted Bee-eater, Winding Cisticola, Goliath Heron, and many others.

Location: It takes about 1 hour to drive mainly on dirt roads from Entebbe to the home of the Shoebill Mabamba Swamp, and it’s about 55km (1 ½ hrs.) west of Kampala.

Ngamba Island

Heading to the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is an extraordinary experience you will never forget. If you are visiting Uganda, this is not to be missed.

We offer several different tours depending on your budget and interests. If you are interested in volunteering and possibly staying for a longer period of time.

Ngamba Island is a project of the Chimpanzees Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust, established in around 1997.  It shelters over 40 orphaned chimpanzees to live out their lives.

Ngamba Island comprises of about 100 acres, 98 of which are forested and separated from the visitor’s area by an electric fence where the chimpanzees roam through the day.

You will view either a morning or afternoon feeding, of the chimpanzees from the visitor’s area.

Location: In Entebbe, Lugard Avenue outside UWEC (Zoo) where safe parking is available and departure from the pier a short walk away. Journey times approximately 50 minutes by speedboat or 90 minutes each way by traditional motorized boat.
