KAMPALA RELIGION SAFARIS – SAFARI INFO

In our Kampala religion Safaris, you will find very many interesting destinations. Around the 19th Century, 2 religions; Islam and Christianity were both making substantial advances in Africa. A couple of times they were in serious competition and this case was in Buganda. Both were called “diini” relating to the traditional African Religions and beliefs. Bahai Temple

Bahai temple is an enormous temple in Uganda regarded as the mother of all temples in Africa. Its located on Kikaya Hill Gayaza in Kampala City. Bahai temple in Kampala Religion Safaris and Africa safaris it’s the only one of its Kind. The Bahai religion was first introduced to Uganda in 1951 and 1958 the foundation stone of the temple was laid on Kikaya Hill in the outskirts of Kampala.

The temple’s wonderful architectural design is something every visitor to Uganda should see. Like all Bahai Temples, t’s a circular nine-sided dome, supported by 9nine massive columns.

The temple was built on Kikaya hill and surrounded with well laid beautiful gardens offering a thrilling ambiance so peaceful to foster meditation and examination of conscience.

Rubaga Cathedral

Rubaga Cathedral, Kampala Roman Catholics archdiocese church, It’s also called St. Mary’s Cathedral, it’s the oldest Roman Catholic Diocese in Uganda. It has a very strong political and cultural history stemming from the eighteenth century.

During this time Rubaga Hill acted as an administrative center for the Buganda Kingdom. During Kabaka Mutesa I’s Reign the palace was struck by lightning. The Lubaga palace was abandoned and Mutesa 1 relocated his palace to Mengo. In 1891 Kabaka Mwanga II who later slaughtered the Catholic converts donated Rubaga hill to the Catholic Missionaries. It is here they built St. Mary’s Cathedral Rubaga. The cathedral’s construction took about 10 years.

The Rubaga hill on which the cathedral was built gives a spectacular view of the Kampala city, you wouldn’t opt to miss such a view.

St. Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe

This is the oldest Anglican cathedral in the history of Uganda, it was hard for the cathedral to be built since Kabaka Muteesa I who had initially welcomed Christianity to Uganda had died and his Son Mwanga II prosecuted the Christians killing about 26 of them. Namirembe cathedral only managed to be built in 1915.

In the cathedral’s backyard cemetery are Sir Albert cook and his Wife, and Bishop James Hannigton some of the revolutionary missionaries who built Mengo hospital.

Uganda National Mosque

This is the national Mosque located on 12acres of land on Old Kampala Hill in Kampala City and its Uganda’s biggest mosque and the second largest in Africa. The Ground structure was started by President Idi Amin but after his death it got stalled for 25 years until when Colonel Muammar Gadhafi financed it.

The National mosque can be seen from very many points in Kampala. Its 2km from Kampala city centre, on Old Kampala Hill.

Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo

The martyr’s shrine in Namugongo is widely known as the place where the killing of the Uganda martyrs took place. This was done under the order of kabaka Mwanga II who instructed his right-hand man and chief executioner Mukajaanga who burnt 12 of the converts.

Three kilometers west of the Catholics basilica is the Anglican Uganda martyrs shrine where 70 Muslim Converts where slaughtered by Kabaka Muteesa I in 1878.

The Uganda martyrs shrine is located in Namungongo, 12Kms Outside of Kampala on the Kampala – Jinja Highway.
